Plans Available Through Liberty Bankers Life

All plans are underwritten by American Benefit Life Insurance Company. No medical exam required — approval is based on a short health questionnaire.

Recommended
Simplified Whole Life (SIWL)
Permanent coverage that never expires

This is the plan most FamilyGuard clients choose — and for good reason. SIWL provides lifelong coverage from the day your policy is issued. Your premium is locked in permanently and never increases, and your coverage never runs out regardless of how long you live. Unlike term insurance, you never have to worry about your policy expiring and leaving your family unprotected.

Coverage for life — never expires
Premiums locked in — never increase
No medical exam required
Builds cash value over time
Available ages 0 through 80
Optional riders available
Coverage from $5,000 to $20,000
Free will document included
Why not term? Term policies expire. If you outlive a 20-year term policy you are left with no coverage and face much higher rates to reapply at an older age. SIWL guarantees your family is protected no matter what.
Limited Pay to 65 (LP65)
Pay until 65, covered for life

Make premium payments only until age 65. After that your policy is fully paid up and coverage continues for the rest of your life with no further payments required. A strong choice for those who want to eliminate insurance payments by retirement.

Lifelong coverage
Payments stop at 65
Builds cash value
Free will included
20-Pay Life (20PL)
Paid in full after 20 years

Pay premiums for exactly 20 years. After that your policy is completely paid off and lifetime coverage remains in force with no further payments — ever. Builds cash value faster than standard whole life policies.

Lifelong coverage
Paid off in 20 years
Faster cash value growth
Free will included
Modified Whole Life (MWL)
Permanent — no riders

Simplified whole life coverage without additional rider benefits. Provides permanent, lifelong protection at the most affordable base premium for those who want straightforward coverage without optional add-ons.

Lifelong coverage
Lower base premium
No riders required
Free will included

Why You Need a Will

Without a will, a court decides who receives your assets — and it may not match your wishes.

A will lets you name a guardian for your minor children. Without one, a judge decides.

A will reduces delays, legal costs, and potential disputes among family members.

This form takes most people under 10 minutes to complete.

Financial Best Practices

Simple, honest advice on protecting your finances, your family, and your legacy. No jargon — just what you should know.

Topics Covered
Wills, Probate & Estate Planning Life Insurance Retirement Planning Password Storage & Digital Security General Financial Health Legacy & Family Planning

Wills, Probate & Estate Planning

What is Probate — and Why You Want to Avoid It

Probate is the legal process a court uses to distribute your assets after you pass away. If you die without a will, the court decides who gets what — and it may not reflect your wishes. Even with a will, probate can take months or years and cost your family thousands in legal fees. Assets like life insurance policies and retirement accounts with named beneficiaries bypass probate entirely, which is one reason they are so valuable.

Action step: Name beneficiaries on every financial account and insurance policy. Review them every few years or after major life events.

Why Every Adult Needs a Will

A will is not just for the wealthy. It is the only legal document that lets you decide who raises your children if something happens to you, who receives your belongings, and how your final wishes are carried out. Without one, state law makes those decisions — and the outcome may not be what your family needs or expects.

Action step: Complete your will while you are healthy and of sound mind. It takes less than 10 minutes with FamilyGuard — and it is free with every life insurance policy.

Store Your Will Where People Can Find It

A will that no one can locate is the same as no will at all. Store the original in a fireproof safe or with your attorney. Give a copy to your executor and let your closest family members know where it is. Do not store it in a safety deposit box alone — banks may restrict access after death before the will is even reviewed.

Action step: Tell your executor exactly where your will and important documents are stored. Write it down.

Life Insurance

Buy Life Insurance While You Are Young and Healthy

Life insurance premiums are determined primarily by your age and health at the time of application. The younger and healthier you are, the lower your rate — and that rate is locked in for the life of your policy. Waiting even a few years can significantly increase what you pay. The best time to apply is always now.

Rule of thumb: A common starting point for coverage is 10 times your annual income. A licensed agent can help you determine what is right for your specific situation.

Keep Your Beneficiary Designations Current

Life insurance pays directly to whoever is named as your beneficiary — it does not go through your will. This means an outdated beneficiary designation can override your wishes entirely. Review your beneficiaries after marriage, divorce, the birth of a child, or the death of a named beneficiary.

Action step: Set a reminder to review all beneficiary designations once per year — on your birthday or at the start of each new year.

Understand What Your Policy Actually Covers

Read your policy and ask your agent to walk you through the key provisions — including any exclusions, the contestability period (typically two years), and how claims are filed. Your beneficiaries should know the policy exists, where it is kept, and how to contact the insurance company if something happens to you.

Action step: Store a copy of your policy with your will and other important documents. Tell your beneficiaries it exists.

Retirement Planning

Your 401k and IRA Are Not Covered by Your Will

Retirement accounts pass directly to whoever is named as beneficiary on the account — not according to your will. Many people do not realize this, and it can lead to unintended outcomes. Make sure the beneficiary designations on your 401k, IRA, and any pension are up to date and consistent with your overall estate plan.

Action step: Log in to each retirement account and confirm your beneficiary designations are current. This takes five minutes and could save your family significant complications.

Start Contributing Early — Even Small Amounts

Compound interest rewards patience above all else. Someone who starts contributing $100 per month at age 25 will retire with significantly more than someone who contributes $200 per month starting at 40 — even though the late starter contributed more total dollars. Time in the market matters more than the amount invested.

Starting point: If your employer offers a 401k match, contribute at least enough to get the full match. That is an immediate 100% return on your investment.

Password Storage & Digital Security

Create a Secure Password Document for Your Family

When someone passes away, their family often cannot access online bank accounts, email, or financial platforms without their login credentials. Create a secure, private document listing your important account usernames, passwords, and PINs. Store it with your will in a fireproof safe — not on your phone or computer where it could be accessed by others or lost.

What to include: Online banking, investment accounts, email, Social Security account, Medicare/Medicaid, and any accounts with automatic payments or balances.

Use a Password Manager for Day-to-Day Security

For your own daily security, use a trusted password manager such as 1Password or Bitwarden. These tools generate strong, unique passwords for every account and store them securely. Never reuse the same password across multiple accounts — if one account is compromised, all of them become vulnerable.

Simple rule: Your password manager master password should be something only you know — never written in a document that could be found. Share it only with your most trusted person.

Plan for Your Digital Estate

Your digital life — email accounts, social media, cloud storage, cryptocurrency, and online subscriptions — is part of your estate. Without a plan, these assets can be lost or inaccessible forever. Many platforms now offer a "legacy contact" or "inactive account" setting. Take five minutes to set these up and document your digital accounts alongside your other important papers.

Platforms to check: Google (Inactive Account Manager), Facebook (Legacy Contact), Apple (Digital Legacy), and any cryptocurrency wallets or exchanges.

General Financial Health

Build an Emergency Fund First

Before investing or purchasing additional coverage, make sure you have three to six months of living expenses saved in an easily accessible account. This fund is your financial safety net — it prevents you from going into debt or cashing out investments when an unexpected expense arises. Keep it in a high-yield savings account separate from your everyday checking.

Starting goal: $1,000 as a starter emergency fund. Then work toward one month of expenses, then three, then six.

Review Your Financial Plan After Every Major Life Event

Marriage, divorce, a new child, a home purchase, the death of a family member, or a significant change in income — each of these events should prompt a review of your insurance coverage, beneficiary designations, will, and savings plan. What made sense at 25 may not be appropriate at 45.

Checklist after a major life event: Update your will, review life insurance coverage, update beneficiary designations, review emergency fund, and contact your agent.

Protect Your Credit

Your credit score affects your ability to borrow money, rent an apartment, and in some cases qualify for certain financial products. Check your credit report for free once per year at AnnualCreditReport.com. Dispute any errors promptly. Consider placing a credit freeze if you are not actively applying for new credit — it is free and prevents unauthorized accounts from being opened in your name.

Free resource: AnnualCreditReport.com is the only federally authorized site for free credit reports from all three bureaus — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

Legacy & Family Planning

Have the Conversation With Your Family

One of the most important things you can do for your family is have an open conversation about your wishes, your finances, and where important documents are located. Many families avoid this topic and are left scrambling at the worst possible time. A brief, calm conversation today can prevent significant stress and confusion later.

What to cover: Location of your will, insurance policies, bank accounts, and login credentials. Who your executor is. What your wishes are for funeral and burial. Who has power of attorney if needed.

Consider a Power of Attorney

A durable power of attorney allows someone you trust to manage your financial and legal affairs if you become incapacitated. Without one, your family may need to go through a lengthy court process to gain the authority to act on your behalf — even for simple tasks like paying your bills. This is a legal document that requires an attorney to prepare, but it is one of the most important protections you can have in place.

Related document: A healthcare proxy or medical power of attorney designates someone to make medical decisions on your behalf. These are separate from a financial power of attorney and both are worth having.

Life Insurance as a Legacy Tool

Life insurance is one of the most efficient ways to leave a financial legacy. A relatively small monthly premium can result in a significant, tax-free death benefit paid directly to your beneficiaries — often within days of a claim being filed. For families without significant assets, life insurance may be the single most impactful financial decision they can make.

Remember: Your will and your life insurance policy work together. A policy without a will, or a will without coverage, leaves gaps. FamilyGuard helps you address both at once.
